Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus even more on the game.
The real advancement in his abilities began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often compete against one another. He was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
