Stu Ungar is considered by most to the very best NL Hold em Poker gambler ever.
The 3 time World Poker Champ was born in New York in ‘53 and started betting poker before reaching his teens.
The young gambler began wagering gin and at the age of ten had won his initial gin tournament, while on holiday with his parents. By the age of fourteen the little poker genius had become a professional and stopped going to school.
In 1954 Stu Ungar entered the history books by winning 10,000 dollars in a gin rummy tournament without sacrificing a single hand, a record which still appears in New York today.
The quick talking superstar has been compared, in poker terms, to sporting superstars like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Stu Ungar had a real talent for betting poker but despite his achievements in Texas hold em poker, he preferred betting gin.
Stu once said that there may a number of day be a much better NL Hold’em player than him but he couldn’t see how anyone could ever be a greater gin gambler.
In 1980 Stu was put on the global map as one of the very best Holdem Poker players in the world when he was crowned World Poker Champ for the 1st time. Amazingly it was the first time he had played in the tournament.
The right after year he dismissed any suggestions that it had been luck, by successfully defending his title. And in 1997 Stu set the record by succeeding his 3rd World poker championship.
But this poker master also battled with substance abuse and a year after winning his 3rd title Stu Ungar died in his hotel room. According to physicians, he had passed away from a cardiac event which was caused by his lifestyle.
Stu had started out with absolutely nothing but his skill and natural talent for the game which made this poker great a millionaire quite a few times over.
