Do you ever receive that itch? The itch to bet, to head to the closest gambling house, to come across a great stakes game of Holdem, to sit at a Black jack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I really like to scratch it.
I also love to watch individuals gamble. No 2 poker faces seem similar. When I bet I like to assume I put on a poker face that’s impassable. Except I know I have specific mannerisms. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I wager on poker or Chemin de fer. And then I smoke. But I chain smoke whether I am succeeding or losing, whether I have a excellent hand or bad.
I once bet in the weekly poker game. The game was generally 5 card draw. There was a person who played with us every single week who often wore a hat. When he was given a very good hand, subconsciously, he would begin touching and betting with his hat. Pointless to say, he in no way won.
The very best poker player I ever saw was a man who produced a lot more movements and gestures at a poker table than anybody I had ever met. He was flawless in the way he dressed. Often an high priced suit and tie, boots shined and nails trimmed. He was meticulous in this manner. And he was often brushing his pant leg or holding his hands or stacking his chips in tidy little piles.
I use to study him for hours. I’d attempt to see if I could spot his tell. Choosing lint off his vest- did this imply he was bluffing? Stacking his chips within a short pile – did this mean he had a great hand?
Many years later I bumped into him in a very bar in Vegas and we had a beer. I asked him if he had been aware of all those movements he manufactured or if they had been unconscious. He told me that just about every individual thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is always checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are attempting to detect the the tell.
So his technique was to give them lots to feel about. His reasoning was if they had been thinking about him choosing a piece of fuzz off his shirt and what it meant they positive weren’t pondering about their cards.
His method was distraction. And it worked for him. Never give up a system that functions for you.
