Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough.
