Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker player on the planet by most of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather showed him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup everything he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not let the negative feedback from other people kill his dream of becoming one of the best poker competitors in the world.
He began competing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win was not a regular outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made two final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an undying love for poker. He says that he is picking up skills every day and is very humble about his success. He admits to making mistakes every single game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some large tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
