Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complex initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi/lo offers an exciting range of betting possibilities and because you have many individuals battling for the high hand, and several trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha/8.
