Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played extensive hours and don’t win most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The real advancement in his abilities happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently challenge one another. He had access into several of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
