Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker contender in the world by many of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to pickup every little thing he could about poker. He would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the adverse feedback from other people annihilate his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He started playing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching experience and winning was not a regular outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing love for poker. He states that he’s learning every day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and always aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some big tournaments, he likes destroying money games on a normal basis.
