Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge each other. He had access into several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
